Project 4 - Snow Globe

For this project we was set the task of designing an object to be housed in a snow globe. However we couldn't choose the conventional stereotypical objects usually found in snow globes such as Christmas trees or Santa Claus, we had to choose something we had never seen ourselves before inside of a snow globe. Therefore I decided to design a classic car for the inside of my snow globe. This classic car was designed to look like a Jaguar XJ13. We then had to 3D model our object on a software such as Google Sketch Up or Solid Works and then 3D print it using a 3D printer.

A snow globe (also called a "water globe", "snowstorm", or "snow dome") is a transparent sphere, usually made of glass,[citation needed] enclosing a miniaturized scene of some sort, often together with a model of a landscape. The sphere also encloses the water in the globe; the water serves as the medium through which the "snow" falls. To activate the snow, the globe is shaken to churn up the white particles. The globe is then placed back in its position and the flakes fall down slowly through the water. Snow globes sometimes have a built-in music box that plays a song. Some snow globes even have a design around the outer base for decoration.

3D printers make it possible for you to take a 3D design on your PC and print it out as a solid, touchable object. 3D printers can empower a whole new generation of designers, engineers and entrepreneurs to create their ideas.

Today's snow globes can include music boxes, moving parts, internal lights, and even electric motors that make the "snow" move so that it is no longer necessary to shake the globe. Some also have central slots for positioning items such as photographs. Contemporary fine artists also use snow globes as a medium.

The Jaguar XJ13 was a prototype racing car developed by Jaguar to challenge at Le Mans in the mid 1960s.

It never raced, and only one was produced. The car has not been officially valued, but a £7 million bid for it was declined by the owners in 1996

The model I will be basing my snow globe on and printing is that of the Jaguar XJ13
