Final Major Project - Week 5

This week was spent locating and buying my materials. The first place I went to was the 4D Model Shop The Arches 120 Leman Street London E1 8EU. This was the first place i visited because peers from my class had recommended going there as they have a wide variety of bespoke model materials that would look very good in my model.

Here is a quote from their website 'We stock over 5,500 model making materials, tools and accessories online and in our retail shop.
We also offer a range of bespoke Workshop Services: Laser cutting and engraving, Acid etching, Dry transfers, Resin & metal casting, Custom scenic builds and also offer a full artwork service.
Our Scenics department make the highest quality model trees available anywhere in the world.

We also put on the annual model makers recruitment fair New Blades where the industry can recruit the very best model makers emerging from our Universities.'

As well as the 4D model shop, I also went to Hobbie Craft to get more basic, cheap materials that didn't have to be so bespoke.

Acrylic paint is a fast-drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion. Acrylic paints are water soluble, but become water-resistant when dry. Depending on how much the paint is diluted with water or modified with acrylic gels, media, or pastes, the finished acrylic painting can resemble a watercolor or an oil painting, or have its own unique characteristics not attainable with other media.

Cardboard is a generic term for a heavy-duty paper of various strengths, ranging from a simple arrangement of a single thick sheet of paper to complex configurations featuring multiple corrugated and uncorrugated layers. Alternatively, the term may simply be used to refer to corrugated paper, a material commonly used for packaging purposes, generally in the form of a container.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic often used in sheet form as a lightweight or shatter-resistant alternative to soda-lime glass. The same material can be utilised as a casting resin; in inks and coatings, and also has other uses.

Although not a type of familiar silica-based glass, the substance, like many thermoplastics, is often technically a type of glass (a non-crystalline vitreous substance) and historically has often been called acrylic glass. Chemically, it is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. The material was developed in 1928 in several different laboratories by many chemists such as William Chalmers, Otto Röhm and Walter Bauer and was first brought to market in 1933 by the Rohm and Haas Company, under the trademark Plexiglas. It has since been sold under many different names, including Acrylite, Lucite, and Perspex.

Hot melt adhesive (HMA), also known as hot glue, is a form of thermoplastic adhesive that is commonly supplied in solid cylindrical sticks of various diameters, designed to be melted in an electric hot glue gun. The gun uses a continuous-duty heating element to melt the plastic glue, which may be pushed through the gun by a mechanical trigger mechanism, or directly by the user. The glue squeezed out of the heated nozzle is initially hot enough to burn and even blister skin. The glue is tacky when hot, and solidifies in a few seconds to one minute. Hot melt adhesives can also be applied by dipping or spraying.
